With less than 48 hours left before the 2022 NBA Draft, a top-three landing position is generally considered a result. The Orlando Magic and Jabbari Smith’s gossip has been pretty loud, and for too long, so it’s probably safe to conclude that he’s staying in Orange County.
The noise around the Oklahoma City Thunder appears to be indicative of Chet Holmgren, and this has led to the assumption that Paulo Banchero will land with the Houston Rockets.
If I was a betting guy, I’d think that’s the way things work. Having said that, if I was a betting guy, I’d also bet on a certain guy to go off script. You should know who this guy is and that’s because we’ve seen him do it over and over over the years…
The Managing Director of OKC has made a career going against the tide. Russell Westbrook and James Harden’s choices weren’t exactly the consensus choices when he made them, so I can realistically see a scenario materializing where he chooses against Holmgren in favor of Panchero, assuming Smith is still a man of magic.
Many of us have already married the idea of a red Banchero in the Rockets. Now what can be gained from Presti that pulls good luck for Houston fans? Well…money, if you’re interested in that kind of thing.
Thanks to our friends at DraftKings, those looking to enhance their nightly experience can double their fun by placing bets on different draw odds. You have the option of following the status quo with Holmgren at two and Banchero at three:
But… if you’re interested in making a few extra bucks and think Presti pulls off Presti, the most tempting bet is Holmgren at three (get your full odds here):
This means that a $100 bet on Holmgren to the Rockets will net you $550 in profit. Call me crazy, but until I see Adrian Wojnarowski or Shams Charania inevitably leak shots on drag night, nothing is off the table. At this time, Camp Holmgren appears to prefer OKC as the destination.
However, that’s what Presti prefers, and I’m not sure any of us know what’s on this guy’s mind right now. With two young guards in Shay Gilgus Alexander and Josh Gedi, Jaden Ivey is unlikely to slip into second, but then again, you can’t rule anything out with Presti. Perhaps any disqualification of Holmgren means he is Banchero, meaning that only Rafael Stone has to take the great talent that fell into his hand.
Galen Green and Kevin Porter Jr. will likely push Ivy down the Rockets’ board. Combined with the bright hole left by Christian Wood’s trade in the forward area, this leaves Holmgren as a slam dunk pick.
This way, your wallet looks a little thicker.
