Can Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies be stopped without Gary Payton II?

The Golden State Warriors lost one of their strongest defensive weapons when Gary Payton II was severely fouled by Memphis Grizzlies’ Dillon Brooks wing and broke his elbow on landing. It will be re-evaluated in two weeks, which is how long this series was completed.

Payton is responsible for guarding Grizzlies star Ja Morant, and the difference was noticeable after he was injured. Morant finished with 47 points in the Grizzlies’ win in Game 2.

Now, the Warriors not only have to figure out which defender will guard Morant, but who will replace Payton in the spin and how he changes the landscape of the series.

CA: What are your early impressions of this series?

Holmes: Heading into this series, we knew it was going to be competitive, but the physical play by both teams took it to another level. The team that can eventually win this series will be the one that proves to be the strongest, both mentally and physically. Between blunders and gossip, the Western Conference semi-finals were a vicious race in every sense of the word.
