March Madness 2022 live: NCAA Women’s Tournament first round scores, updates, upsets for Saturday’s games

We’re deep in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Women’s Championship, and although there is chalk at the top of the category, there are many double-digit seedbeds in the second round. Two of the 10 seed (Creighton, South Dakota), two of the 11 seed (Villanova and Princeton), and seed 12 (Florida’s Gulf Coast) are all still dancing after their first games.

At the top of the sowing line, the usual suspects took care of the business, with all first four seeds and all four number 2 seeds heading toward a double-digit win in the first round.

Today, the Bridgeport region is in pole position with all eight of the first round matches there, along with each of the other three regions concluding the Round of 64.

  • The No. 3 seeded Jackson State was on the brink of what would have been the first upset 14-3 in NCAA Women’s Championship history, leading by 10 with only 4:54 left. LSU’s squad responded to coach Kim Mulkey with a 13-0, however, to a slip by the Lady Tigers with an 83-77 victory. If LSU loses, it would be Mulke’s first loss in the inaugural round since 2001, her first year at Baylor.
  • 2 seed UConn opened the first round with a confident 83-38 victory over 15th seed Mercer. Husky has four players with double digits and made 44% of their three throws.
  • NC State, the last seeded No. 1 to play in this year’s tournament, put up an offensive display against No. 16 ranked Longwood. Wolfpack had five players that hit double digits in their 96-68 win record, and senior guard Raina Perez led the way with 16 points in a 7 shot. against 8.
  • Tennessee State — ranked No. 4 in the Wichita area this year — extended its career as the only school to appear in all of the NCAA Women’s Championships. The Lady Vols opened their 40th straight run against Buffalo, winning 80-67 behind 18 points, 11 rebounds from top striker Alexus Dye.
  • Arizona is looking to recapture last year’s racing magic for the National Championship. Ranked #4 in the Greensboro area, Adia Barnes’ Wildcats open against UNLV.
