Mike Mustakas scores twice as the Reds crush the Pirates 8-2

Mike Mustakas was doing his best to impersonate Jason Voorhees on Friday the 13th as he killed the Pittsburgh Pirates bowlers on the night, netting two goals at home as the Cincinnati Reds beat their divisional rival 8-2 Friday night to ensure at least a split. Cincinnati’s offense was quiet in the first two halves, in order in both frames. But Tyler Naquin and Kyle Farmer had back-to-back doubles to lead the third game to get the Reds off the board and tie the match. A fly by TJ Friedl later in the inning made Cincinnati a 2-1 lead.

After the Buccaneers managed to run to the bottom of the inning, it was Mike Mustakas who broke it off with Mitch Keeler’s Homer Single. The Reds played an extra in the fifth, starting with another forward double for Tyler Naquin. Brandon Drury would give Naken and TJ Friedel his own double later in the inning as Cincinnati led 5-2.

Old friend Heath Hemprey took charge of the Buccaneers in the seventh inning and was never welcomed by his old team again. TJ Friedl walked and scored in Brandon Drury’s 2-run – his seventh of the season. Then Mike Mustakas crushed his second blast of the day, with a 427-foot shot to center and made it 8-2. This is where the score remained as the Cincinnati pittsburgh office closed.

Tyler Mahle gave up his home lead to start down the first half. Or did? A fan picked up the ball in the first row, and the referees checked the play to see if he got over the fence. He didn’t, the call stopped and the Buccaneers were leading 1-0. Mahley was retired for the next eight hits in a row, but Jamal hit him again with one exit in the third and was scoring when Ke’Bryan Hayes lined up a double in the left corner of the field, tying the match at 2-2. It would be the last time the Buccaneers would score as Mahle went 6.0 innings and hit eight rounds with just one walk and those two got runs.

Alexis Diaz continued his rookie dominance, perfecting the seventh inning as he reduced his ERA to 0.55 on the year. Joel Connell came out and took charge of the match in the eighth game and threw a penalty kick to keep the Reds 8-2 ahead and send the match to ninth place. Jared Solomon entered the game in ninth place and needed just three points to take Cincinnati’s win. The rookie loyalist had to deal with a song from former Red Josh VanMeter, but he sent the Buccaneers off the board and the Reds took an 8-2 win.

The key moment of the game

Brandon Drury’s two-stroke in the fifth made him a 5-2 match.
