Former college basketball star Royce White has announced he is running for Congress, it was announced Tuesday.
White is running for Minnesota’s fifth seat in Congress, which is currently held by Democrat Ilhan Omar. The former Iowa player is running for Republican, and she is one of three players competing against her.
In a two-minute, 20-second clip, White announced his nomination using a video montage of analysts commenting on his character as well as an audio commentary from him.

“Ten years ago, I took over the NBA and the establishment,” he said in his video monologue. “I said that mental health was one of the greatest issues we face. And I was willing to give up my dream of fighting for people I had never met before. I took the lead when others wouldn’t.”
“My name is Royce White. I’m a fifth-generation Minnesota and a Twin City product. But first of all, I’m an American.”
White went on to discuss his views on the United States.
“I am running for Congress because our leaders have sold us everything we can,” he said. We have to fight for freedom, we have to protect our communities. We have to take back what it means to be an American citizen.”
He has taken an anti-globalization stance and spoken out against dealing with the pandemic and the vaccine, encasing his voice with images of Omar, Bill Gates, Barack Obama and Anthony Fauci, among others.
White is a former college basketball player who played for Iowa State in the 2011-12 season. He scored one of the best seasons in the school’s history, leading the team in scoring (13.4), rebounding (9.3) and assisting (5.0).
Advertised for the NBA and drafted into 16th place by the Rockets. The striker played only one season in the league, achieving three matches with the Kings. White has been very vocal about his anxiety and his mental health in general during his time in the NBA, which put him at odds with the organization.
He then went on to play professional basketball in Canada for two years. White also played in the Big3, which is a three-and-a-half basketball league. He had a brief stint in MMA, losing his debut in December 2021 against Daiqwon Buckley by unanimous decision.
White has been politically active in the past, specifically in 2020 during the Black Lives Matter protests after the murder of George Floyd. White also worked closely with Steve Bannon, the former chief strategist in the White House under Donald Trump.
Omar was sworn in in 2019 and re-elected on November 20.
